The Loss of a Legend

A top-winning canine competitor passed away.


Dog Agility legend Jack Russell Terrier Bailey passed away Monday, August 17, 2009, at the age of 11, from kidney and liver failure due to Leptospirosis. Few have time and again experienced the thrill of high excitement and top competition like Bailey and owner/handler Mike Murphy of Pennsylvania.

Together, Mike and Bailey were ranked in the Agility Top Ten in all five categories from 2003 to 2008 and in Snooker in 2002. They remain the leader in Lifetime Standings of the Agility Top Ten in every category in their division, earning more than 2,200 points in Standard Agility, Gamblers, Snooker, Relay and tournament qualifiers.

Mike and Bailey together also earned more than 70 USDAA titles since their career began in 2001, including most notably:

  • Agility Dog® (2001)
  • Advanced Agility Dog® (2002)
  • Master Agility Dog® (2003)
  • Tournament Master - Platinum (2005)
  • Standard Agility Champion - Platinum (2006)
  • Jumpers Champion - Platinum (2006)
  • Relay Champion - Platinum (2006)
  • Gamblers Champion - Platinum (2008)
  • Agility Dog Champion® - Platinum (2008) 

They met with equally impressive success while representing the United States in the IFCS World Agility Championships in 2004, 2006 and 2008:

  • IFCS Silver Medalist in Jumping (2004)
  • IFCS Silver Medalist in Biathlon (Jumping & Standard) (2006)
  • IFCS Silver Medalist in Snooker (2006)
  • IFCS World Champion (Gold Medalist) in Standard Agility (2008)
  • IFCS World Champion (Gold Medalist) in Gamblers (2008)
  • IFCS World Champion (Gold Medalist) in Jumping (2008)
  • IFCS World Champion (Gold Medalist) in Best All Around (collectively, Standard, Gamblers, Jumping and Snooker) (2008)

In USDAA tournament competition during their career, Mike and Bailey earned the following tournament wins in the 12" division:

  • $10,000 Dog Agility Steeplechase® Championships - Gold Medal (2003)
  • $10,000 Dog Agility Steeplechase® Championships - Silver Medal (2004)
  • $10,000 Dog Agility Steeplechase® Championships - Silver Medal (2006)
  • $10,000 Dog Agility Steeplechase® Championships  - Bronze Medal (2007)
  • Grand Prix of Dog Agility® World Championships - Silver Medal (2007)
  • Performance Grand PrixSM Championships - Silver Medal (2008)
They were also three time JRTCA Agility Champion.

Throughout their career together, Mike and Bailey earned 375 qualifications in USDAA titling classes and more than 509 qualifications in titling and tournament combined, earning them their Platinum Lifetime Achievement Award in September of 2008.

The USDAA staff expresses its sympathy at the loss of such an amazing canine athlete.
