Subscriber news year in review by Brenna Fender

As the editor of the subscriber news here on USDAA.com, I try to offer a wide variety of articles to supplement your paid subscription. In 2010, readers saw many training exercises, interviews, and other stories of interest to competitors. Let's take a look at some of them.

We started the year with information on goal setting, in a short article called Goals Big and Small by Jo Unbehaun, and a compilation post called More on Goals. Then our canine reporter Rickie Roo interviewed junior handlers who attended the 2009 Cynosport World Games , Bonnie Henderson offered tips on dealing with really smart dogs , and Bonnie Allen reported on RACE's very full Christmas agility trial. In addition, we offered articles including course analysis, several training exercises,  an article on how to use your stairs to increase canine fitness , and cold weather trialing tips (which you might need to read right now).

Also over the winter, we branched out by offering our first audio interview, in which Windi Williams-Weaver spoke to 2009 Steeplechase Champion handler Tori Self. We offered event reports, beautiful photos from trialsconfessions from a "lazy dog trainer," a look at safe and healthy dog bowls, a fun series of articles involving a course analysis challenge, and so much more.

As spring allowed more training and trialing in northern parts of the country, we presented more event reports, including details from the Spring Festivalphotos from the Mid-Atlantic Agility Showcase, ways to make your goals work best for you,  and many more training exercises, interviews, and so on. We even reported on a wedding that took place at an agility trial!

In the summer, we looked at the Dog Agility Working Group's 25th anniversary, a look at handling systemsfairness_in_dog_training, tips for training in the heat, a look at coercion as a training technique, canine-friendly cars and auto safety, a story of persistence in the face of a whole bunch if NQs, tips on running a dog without using a start line stay, and more. There were interviews, lots of exercises, and too many great articles for me to list.

As fall rolled around and the regular news page saw more articles about the 2010 Cynosport World Games, subscribers still got their fair share of exclusive material. Ellen Levy Finch analyzed the Southwest Regional round two Grand Prix course, Tinna Brown shared a report of the excellent (and adorable) workers that helped at a Paws in Motion trial, and we had articles on using positive reinforcement to stop behavior, a trial that took place in the wake of a hurricane, a look at pessimistic dogs, and tons more interviews, exercises, and so on.

One of the ways we provide such an amazing variety of great articles for subscribers is by using the talents of people within the USDAA community. If you have a story you'd like to write, an event you'd like to report on, an interview you'd like to do, or photos you'd like to share, please email me at bfender@usdaa.com and let me know about it.
