USDAA Loses a Longtime Judge

Dave Seeger passed away on July 30, 2011.

It is with great regret that we must pass on the news that Dave Seeger, who has judged USDAA agility since 1995, passed away Saturday after spending the day at the Buckeye Region Agility Group trial in Columbus, Ohio. USDAA president Kenneth Tatsch says, "We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dave Seeger. We are very appreciative for his years of support of USDAA agility and our thoughts are with his family and friends. He will be dearly missed."

Dave got his first dog for agility, a Rottweiler named Heidi, in 1992. He started puppy classes at the local obedience club where he met several soon-to-be agility enthusiasts. Dave joined with several others to begin a USDAA club called the Buckeye Region Agility Group (BRAG), a group that is still very successful today.

Dave competed with many dogs over the years. Bismark, a mixed breed, and Diva, a Belgian Malinois, were past competitors. Dave's current dogs include Greta, a Malinois, Bug, a Rottweiler, and Mocha, a Pit Bull mix. Dave's dogs are now being cared for by Dave's many friends.

In addition to competing, Dave was the BRAG trial chair for many years, and was a respected and well-liked USDAA agility judge. He was also a big supporter of junior handlers and the junior handler program. One competitor recalls that a young boy's dog once left the ring and ran off while running in a junior handler class in North Carolina where Dave was judging. The boy was discouraged, but Dave asked him to bring the dog back in the ring and try the course on lead. The run went well, spectators cheered, and the boy left the ring with a smile on his face. Dave was known for this kind of behavior. Another agility competitor from the area says, "[Dave] was crusty on the outside but all marshmallowy on the inside."

Outside of agility, Dave was a private contractor. Friend and fellow BRAG founder Lisa Baird says, "Many of us in the area have signs of him all over our homes." Dave also spent several years in the 1990s volunteering at the Capital Area Humane Society.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Ann Seeger; sister, Nancy (Roger) Towers; three nephews; one niece; and many friends. Mourners may visit on the Schoedinger Hilltop Chapel, 3030 West Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, August 6, 2011 from 2:00PM-4:00PM to pay respects. A funeral mass will be held at St. Raphael Church in Bay Village, Ohio in the coming weeks. Contributions in Dave's memory may be made to the Capital Area Humane Society (3015 Scioto-Darby Executive Court, Hilliard, Ohio 43206 or
