Perhaps Minnesota is unique with so many trial opportunities for junior handlers, with three local clubs who offer four USDAA trials with junior handler classes each year. Perhaps we are "spoiled" with a very active 4-H program where nearly 4,000 4-H dog project members have the opportunity to train and compete in a state-wide agility program based on the USDAA junior handler program. We are quite fortunate to have the support of so many agility clubs (both USDAA and AKC based) that will allow juniors into their training classes, and several of which have started to offer junior handler specific classes and the USDAA league program. With all of the outreach that the various clubs have been doing for the junior handlers, we may well see the junior handler classes at local trials grow in the next couple of years! We have already seen a few of our teens showing in the Championship and Performance programs (which is one of the desired goals). Typically, the fall shows have more juniors competing, simply because most of the 4-H training classes for junior handlers start in the month of June. Stay tuned to see what happens at the Fall MAC trial!
