Meet another member of the US 2013 IFCS Continental Championships of Europe team!
The 2013 IFCS Continental Championships of Europe, which will be held near Gerona, Spain, are coming soon. The event begins on April 4th! To help us all get ready for this exciting inaugural event, we are featuring each of our team members here on USDAA.com. The team member of the day is Terry Herman!
Terry, who lives in Olney, Maryland, will be competing in the mini division with Sonic's Pocket Rocket, otherwise known as Idgie, a three-year-old Miniature Poodle. Idgie is the daughter of Suzanne Wesley's Sonic, a former IFCS team member. Terry is a retired employee relations trainer and consultant. Terry started doing in agility in 1989 with Miniature Poodles and then Portuguese Water Dogs. We asked Terry a few questions about her experiences in agility and her plans for the upcoming event.
What (if anything) are you doing to prepare for the CCOE event?
Trying to do more conditioning for me, and practicing some of the international course challenges contained in the judge's sample courses. We've also had one team practice day in North Carolina, thanks to Greg and Dudley Fontaine, and we may have another mini-practice in Maryland.
How did you feel when you found out that you made the team?
Very excited, and a little shocked.
What strengths do you think you and your dogs bring to the team (particularly on international courses)?
Idgie generally has good independent contacts and weaves and the ability to work at a distance when necessary, so that gives me some flexibility in dealing with the challenges demanded on the international courses.
Have you ever competed outside of the US before, or gone out of the country for other activities?
Except for the IFCS classes at Cynosport, no, I've never competed in international competition. I have traveled outside the US. Besides Canada and Mexico, I traveled to Germany several times on business, and I spent a summer as a student in France with stays in the UK. I've also cruised through Northern Europe, including the Scandinavian countries and Russia, and also through the Caribbean and the Panama Canal.
Are you bringing anyone with you to cheer on Team USA?
Unfortunately, no, although Frank Holik did offer to carry my suitcase!
Are you planning to do any sightseeing or other activities while you are in Europe for the event?
Absolutely. I've always wanted to see Barcelona, so Jen Pinder, Tracy Hirsch, and her mother, and I are spending three days after the event sightseeing and shopping in Barcelona, with maybe a little side trip to the beach if we can.
Any other comments?
Just that I'm thrilled to have this opportunity and delighted to be on a team with such a great group of people. Special thanks to Dave Grubel for agreeing to be our manager.
