2014 Cynosport World Games Day 4

Saturday was an exciting one at the Cynosport World Games! Check out the highlights from cynosport.com

Saturday was sunny and busy! Team Jumpers, Masters/Performance Challenge Standard and the Grand Prix of Dog Agility Semifinals ran in the morning and early afternoon. Then the Three-Dog Team/Performance Versatility Performance Relay took place, and the $10,000 Steeplechase/Performance Speed Jumping finals finished off the night. The Grand Prix Semifinals course proved to be a challenge for many dogs and handlers.

From #3-#4, handlers had their first real test. Dogs that turned to their left were presented with the #8 off-course jump. but, if they stayed on course to #4, they were angled in a way that presented the #5 weaves instead of the #11 off-course. Dogs that turned to their right over #3 had to avoid #2 and faced a tougher turn to the weaves. After the weaves, there was another major challenge. Many handlers that hurried ahead to front cross after the long jump earned faults at the teeter. There were missed contacts and fly-offs.  Handlers who managed the teeter were caught behind and were more likely to earn an off-course at the #14 jump after the long jump. There were a few misses in the #12-#13-#14 serpentine. Dogwalk down contacts were a bit tough for those who were moving toward the #19 tunnel. But, those handlers that stuck close to the dogwalk were behind when their dogs exited the tunnel, and this occasionally caused spins or misdirection before #20.

The afternoon's Performance Versatility Pairs Relay and Dog Agility Masters Team Relay runs were exciting and fun. In one notable instance in Pairs, the first dog joined the second at the start of the second half of the run. There's nothing like a little brace agility to liven things up a bit! The Sandy Crossbow (Arrow and Deanna Fairchild & Grit and Monica Bush) ran in costume, which everyone enjoyed. Watch Crystal Viper and the Electric Steeplets run the Dog Agility Masters Team Relay.

After running agility, many competitors headed over to the course-a-lure area to blow off some steam. Jessica Brown's Vendetta and Annie DeChance's Pinky both had a great time chasing! The Halloween contest was a lot of fun! Some of the costumes were amazing. "Most Elaborate Costume" winner Jessica Brown was "The Phantom of the Opera." She made an entrance into the contest with music from "Phantom" as accompaniment. Her dogs played the parts of the Phantom, Raoul, and Christine, and each of the dogs' handlers wore custom T-shirts with lines from the musical. Jessica herself was the crashing chandelier in a costume she hand-made using 99 feet of beads! It took her two months of part time work to create that costume. See all the contest winners here.

The crowded cheered competitors on.

The Performance Speed Jumping Championships and the $10,000 Steeplechase Championships were hotly contested. See Saturday's courses and results.
