Sadly many dogs remain homeless, living in shelters and foster homes awaiting a new family to take them in. Here are some ideas to remember these dogs in need.
While there are no nationally organized events to help out local shelters and rescues, you can still help out where you live. Most shelters and rescues hold holiday donation drives for much needed items such as dog toys, food, treats, blankets, towels, crates and other dog-related supplies. Check with your favorite local group to see if they participate in the Amazon.Com "Smiles" program or have an Amazon donation wish list.
While these organizations need donations year round, the holidays are the perfect time to see what you can donate, whether it's goods you don't need any more such gently used towels and blankets, or monetary donations.
Another option is volunteering time to assist with adoptions, training, and holding events. Petfinder is a wonderful website that can help you find groups local to you that you would like to support, and they also provide additional tips on how you can help.
Operation Santa Paws is a group that leads donation drives in locations around the country. You can find more information about drop off locations and cities served on their website. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance is also organizing local donation drives to animal shelters.
