It's time to start thinking about the 2007 Cynosport World Games coming up this fall and one great way to do that is to watch last year's event on DVD. Review by Brenna Fender
The USDAA has packaged the 2006 $10,000 Dog Agility Steeplechase Championships, the USDAA Performance National Standard Championships, and the Grand Prix of Dog Agility World Championships on three different approximately hour-long DVDs.
Unlike videos of other national and international events, every final run is included. The insightful and interesting commentary from David Weese and USDAA President Kenneth Tatsch makes these DVDs feel like a broadcast of a live event without the disappointment of missed runs and commercial down time. Some fun crowd noise also adds to the "you are there" feeling.
Each DVD begins with a brief description of the course. Tatsch points out particularly difficult areas and clips demonstrate his descriptions. Then the fun begins: amazing run after amazing run! The clean rounds - and the faulted ones - are inspiring, educational, and entertaining. It's also fun to see friends running in the big ring and to put faces with the names of people you've only read about in magazines and on the Internet. The international competitors add another level of interest to the DVD by demonstrating what may be unfamiliar handling moves.
The easy-to-navigate DVD format makes it convenient to locate and view particular jump height classes repeatedly. At the end of each run, the course time and faults are displayed and discussed, and at the conclusion of each height class, placements are shown. The camera angles are excellent and the video appears to be edited with the competitor in mind. There are no cute-but-pointless shots of dogs going through tunnels - only great views of handling techniques that viewers can enjoy and learn from.
Purchase one DVD for $24.99 or all three for $49.99 on the USDAA website.
