Boost Your Mental Agility Game
Tips to take your performance to the next level

As agility grows in popularity and competition intensifies, athletes are realizing that excelling in this fast-paced sport requires more than just physical skill — it demands a sharp “mental game.”
Tegan Moore, an agility competitor from Carnation, Washington, credits mental management with her increased focus and concentration in the ring. At the 2024 Cynosport® World Games Presented by Purina® Pro Plan®, she competed with her Koolies, Reckless and Peachthief; Peachthief earned a bronze medal in the 20” Grand Prix® finals, their first national podium.
“The focus and confidence I’ve gained since I started mental management, in addition to the tools I’ve worked to build for myself, have really improved my ability to execute on course,” Tegan said. “Having a mental game plan means I can let go of worrying (and at least some of my nerves) and actually enjoy running at big events. It’s helped my handling, which is what I’d hoped for, but the benefit of being more present and in the moment with my dogs is one I hadn’t expected.
“Once I saw the positive impact my mental management skills had on my dog training and agility performance, I began applying them to other aspects of my life as well. It’s helped far beyond just dog sports — I have a much clearer path forward in the things that matter to me,” she added.
Quick, Effective Steps to Boost Your Mental Game
If you’re looking to take your performance to the next level, it might be time to explore the power of mental coaching. Here are some key steps to help sharpen your focus and elevate your agility game.
1. Cultivate positive self-talk.
What words come to mind when you talk about yourself, your dog or your training? If phrases like “horrible,” “I can’t do this,” or “I’m just not good enough” slip into your thoughts, it’s time for a mindset overhaul. Transforming negative self-talk into empowering, positive dialogue can significantly improve your mental game and boost your confidence on the course.
2. Establish a strong routine.
Success on the agility course starts long before stepping to the line. Developing a consistent routine — complete with clear goals, structured training sessions, and pre- and post-run objectives — helps build mental and physical patterns that benefit both you and your dog. A well-crafted routine primes you for success, day in and day out.
3. Harness the power of meditation, mental imagery and breathwork.
Don’t underestimate the power of stillness. Taking a few moments to meditate, visualize your runs or simply focus on your breath can work wonders for your mental focus. These techniques not only help you identify areas for improvement in your training but also provide a calming ritual to center your mind. Visualizing success before stepping onto the course can set the tone for a confident, controlled performance.
Some of the world’s most elite athletes swear by these mental strategies — and many also work with mental coaches to sharpen their psychological edge. If you’re serious about standing out from the competition, partnering with a coach could be the game-changer you need to elevate your performance.
