Lexi Wiethoff has been in the agility ring since before she was born. Her mom continued to run during her pregnancy, and after Lexi was born and learned to walk, that same dog taught her the fundamentals. When she was 12 years old, Lexi’s aunt bred an Australian Shepherd puppy, Bronx, who has since taken Lexi’s love of the sport to the next level.

“Bronx is incredibly intelligent and has a reputation for knowing the course better than I do,” said Lexi, who lives in Arizona and trains with Good Dog Agility Club when she is on break from the University of Wyoming (UW). “I continued with agility throughout middle and high school, but I always had a passion for horses, too.”

Inspired both in and out of the ring by her first trainer, Rebecca Jernigan, Lexi decided to pursue a career as an equine veterinarian. “I always looked up to Rebecca because of her dedication to the sport, and she was en route to become a veterinarian, which was an impressive goal,” Lexi said. “When I applied to UW’s pre-vet program, my application was packed full of volunteer hours from trials and leadership from helping instruct classes.”

Since starting at UW, Lexi has missed playing and running with Bronx, who stayed at home with her family. She hopes to create a recreational agility club with advice from the Intercollegiate Dog Agility Association (IDAA) to bring the fun of the sport to other dog enthusiasts and continue her own journey more consistently.

“No matter where my education or career takes me, agility will always be part of my life,” Lexi said. “I look forward to competing for years to come!”
