Meet Valkyrie: The Highest Scoring Bedlington Terrier in USDAA History
JoAnn Burtness knew her pup was destined for greatness.
“From the minute Valkyrie was born, I knew this was going to be a very special journey.”
JoAnn Burtness, from Louisburg, N.C., knew immediately that Valkyrie, a Bedlington Terrier, was going to be a strong and fast dog.
“As soon as she could walk, she started playing on the wobble board, baby teeter and tunnels. Our trainer soon encouraged us to begin competing in USDAA with her,” remarked Burtness.
Now, at the age of 10, Valkyrie has proven just how strong and fast she could be. Valkyrie is owner of many USDAA Bedlington Terrier “firsts,” including the first to earn an Agility Dog Champion Title, first to earn a Masters Tournament Gold Title, and most recently, with the help of USDAA@Home!SM, Valkyrie became the highest scoring Bedlington Terrier in USDAA history.
“As I mentioned, Valkyrie was destined for a great journey. I am very proud of her spirit and the competitor she has become,” said Burtness. “I am glad we have been able to continue working towards accomplishing becoming the highest scoring Bedlington in USDAA history. It is a lifetime accomplishment for Valkyrie.”
Intrigued by the very unique experience of the Bedlington Terrier, Burtness got Thor (Valkyrie’s father). Thor’s vet encouraged Burtness to begin her agility career with him 15 years ago. Today, USDAA@Home! has allowed her to continue her agility career with the small, but very intelligent and fiercely fun Valkyrie.
“The USDAA@Home! platform has not only helped us stay in shape during this crazy time, it has also given us the opportunity to continue training and working towards Valkyrie’s lifetime achievement,” commented Burtness. “The program has helped us improve so much as a team, plus it is a ton of fun! I am so happy USDAA has come up with this creative way of staying connected.”
