Stephen Routh became an agility judge in 2014 to give back to the sport that brought his family so much joy. He recently served as a judge at the 2024 Cynosport® Dog Agility World Games Presented by Purina® Pro Plan®, where he enjoyed having a front-row seat to watching some of the most talented agility teams compete. Here, he offers some advice going into the new year, for seasoned and new competitors.

It’s easy to get caught up in an event’s excitement and competitive spirit, but it’s essential to remember the deeper bond that brings us all together – our love for our dogs.

I often tell participants to keep in mind that their dogs didn’t drive themselves to the trial; their handlers brought them. This serves as a gentle reminder that our dogs rely on us not just for transport but for care, guidance and kindness throughout the competition. Our dogs are there to enjoy the experience with us, and they thrive on our positive energy and encouragement.

Taking a moment to appreciate our bonds can transform the way we approach each run. When handlers remember to be kind and have fun, it creates a more positive and supportive atmosphere for everyone involved. Our dogs respond to this kindness with enthusiasm and joy, which in turn enhances their performance and overall trial experience.

By fostering an environment of mutual respect and enjoyment, we improve our overall experiences and set a positive example for others in the community. It’s these moments of kindness and shared joy that make our sport truly special and remind us why we fell in love with it in the first place.
