Snooker Rule Update
Improves Scoring Consistency - Effective October 1, 2025
To ensure consistent and equitable scoring in the Snooker class, rules are being amended to address the award of points associated with hurdles or jumps that are displaced in the Opening Sequence so that every handler’s tactical choices and performances are equitably and fairly recognized.
This rule serves to restore the basic concept of Snooker by placing emphasis on the risk/reward challenges established by the judge, where the course design and time constraints are intended to provide a variety of strategies that can lead to optimal results for a competitor rather than a limited strategy of seeking maximum possible points in the fastest time.
- Zero Points for Faulted Displaceable Hurdles & Jumps
Any displaceable hurdle or jump defined by the course as a "Color other than Red" that is displaced (i.e., faulted) in the Opening Sequence will be scored zero points and reduced to zero point value for the remainder of the round. This applies to any Color Combination that includes one or more displaceable hurdles or jumps. - Opening Sequence Strategy Options
If the handler strategy was to repeat the same Color in the opening sequence, following a subsequent successful Red, the handler may choose—- a different Color to earn points in pursuit of maximum possible points, or
- to perform a previously faulted Color for zero points by having the dog pass between the hurdle/jump uprights in the correct direction in order to maintain the sequence.
- In The Closing Sequence
In performing the Closing Sequence, when any hurdle or jump has been previously displaced, its value is zero points, and the sequence is maintained by passing between the uprights. Any additional obstacle fault that may occur in the combination shall be considered inconsequential and play continues. Scoring shall cease when any fault (including refusal) occurs during the Closing Sequence that would be penalized at the class level as defined in the regulations, except as stipulated for a combination including a previously displaced hurdle or jump.
Chapter 8 of USDAA Rules & Regulations have been updated for this change, along with clarification of other provisions.
These refinements are to be effective for events held on or after October 1, 2025, with earlier adoption available when briefed by the judge.
At the time of publication, we have been advised that Agility Trial Secretary scorekeeping software has been updated to accommodate this change regarding displaced Color obstacles. Groups should be sure to download the software update.
