USDAA Announces Second Intercollegiate Dog Agility Club
PLANO, TEXAS – September 24, 2019 – The United States Dog Agility Association (USDAA) is pleased to announce the newest charter member in their Intercollegiate Dog Agility (IDA) League. The Dog Agility Club of Colorado State University is the second club to launch since Arizona State University’s dog agility club was organized in January 2019 by leader, Rebecca Jernigan.
The Dog Agility Club of Colorado State University (CSU) was organized by Samantha Clark of Rockville, MD, who recently transferred to CSU. She is an Animal Science major with plans to attend Veterinary School in the future. She has an agricultural science associate’s degree from her previous college, Utah State University.
When she lived in Utah, Samantha got Bentley, a border collie/blue heeler mix and met Kristin Sittner, who introduced her to the sport. “I had an interest in agility but I needed guidance. She worked her magic on both me and my dog and has been an amazing mentor,” Samantha said.
Kristin was the one who told Samantha that USDAA had introduced the new Intercollegiate Dog Agility League and suggested she start a club at her new University. That information was the spark Samantha needed to take action and reach out to other students, complete the necessary paperwork to form a club on campus, and reach out to the USDAA IDA Office to complete the application.
The new Dog Agility Club of Colorado State University currently has more than five members ranging from seasoned 4-H agility participants to those who are just starting. They look forward to getting more involved in the sport and spreading information about it on campus.
“We approved the Dog Agility Club of Colorado State University application a few days after it was submitted and sent Samantha and the club an acceptance letter as a charter member. We have several other clubs in various stages of formation and are working to support them to build members and promote their efforts to get started,” said Kenneth Tatsch USDAA President and Founder. “We believe encouraging youth programs like this will ensure the future of our sport.”
By promoting a culture of partnership, volunteerism, and competitive excellence, USDAA’s Intercollegiate Dog Agility League charter schools seek to represent the highest level of sportsmanship and canine care in both their personal and club activities. New IDA clubs are required to apply and register with the USDAA, be affiliated with a local USDAA Club or USDAA member who will provide guidance, and demonstrate support for the broader USDAA community through volunteerism at USDAA events.
While IDA club members do not need to compete, participate in USDAA events, or even own a dog to join a club, plans for an IDA championship will be announced in the near future. For more details visit https://www.usdaa.com/IDA.cfm.
