A dog's paws

Monday, January 29th is "National Corn Chip Day," a holiday no one seems really sure how it came to be. It does bring up the age old question though of, "why does my dog's feet smell like Fritos?" Enough dog owners have noticed this "phenomena" that it's more than just a unique personal opinion.

A dog sweats through this paws, which can lead to their paws developing some odor from the perspiration on their paw pads and the fur between their toes. A dog's paws also contain bacteria that is naturally occurring, the most prevalent of which are Proteus and Pseudomonas. This bacteria is similar to yeast found in humans that is part of their regular bodily environment. The smell that comes from this bacteria combined with sweat is known to have a "corn chip" smell to it.

Dog owners should be aware, however, that if they notice a very strong odor coming from their dog's feet, this may be cause for concern and a trip to the veterinarian. An odor could indicate your dog is suffering from medical issues such as a bacterial or fungal infection or dermatitis. If you notice your dog's feet smell strongly, and not like delicious corn chips, it's time for a medical check-up!
