The third week of March is National Poison Prevention Week, sponsored by the American Association of Poison Control Centers. The AAPCC maintains a poison information line for people with the toll free number 1-800-222-1222. It's a good idea for humans to keep this number handy as well as resources specifically made for pet poisoning.

The ASPCA has a 24/7 hotline (888-426-4425) for pet owners staffed by veterinarians who can give you information in an emergency situation. The service does cost a $65 fee. You should also keep handy the phone number of your local emergency veterinarian. The ASPCA also has a free mobile app you can download with lists of toxic substances to keep your pet clear of. Many things that would seem perfectly safe to us are dangerous for pets, such as onions, raisins, and chocolate, as well as many household and garden plants and common substances like household cleaners and prescription drugs.

Another helpful resources is the Pet Poison Helpline, which has a Youtube channel with veterinarian-prepared videos. The Pet Poison Helpline is also staffed 24 hours a day by veterinary professionals and has a $59 charge - 855-764-7661.
